Colin Hay says “Burbank has a strict curfew”!

Posted on August 1st, 2009

A really cool thing happened last Sunday at the Colin Hay show.  Colin Hay was ready to start his next song and he stopped and shared with the crowd that Burbank has a strict curfew and it was almost time!  He said he would finish the song he started and 1 more for the crowd.  Colin Hay ended the show with such spirit and good energy!  Thank you!

Check out his new album being released August 18, 2009,  American Sunshine!   Colin Hay shared those tunes with us!  Pretty cool!

An Awesome Concert with The Answer and Bella Donna

Posted on July 21st, 2009

Emcee and DJ Bill McBee started the evening off with music, announcements, and thanking our wonderful sponsors!  The Answer rolled into the evening with some great hits from the past.  Lots of different tunes and beats!  They shot out shirts from a hand type cannon into the crowd, who loved catching them!  They also gave out inflatable guitars, balls, and other fun things for the kids, but the adults were loving them too!  A great energetic show!

Intermission is also very exciting.  We give away fun items from the sponsors!  Gary Bric’s Ramp gave a $50 gift certificate, Burbank Water and Power gave a gift bag, Alpha Dogs gave an iPod Shuffle, very cool.  Last, was the infamous jetBlue tickets!  Thanks again to our sponsors!

Bella Donna came out!  She looked exactly like Stevie Nicks.  She had the outfits, the scarves, the top hat, coat, and the white dress.  Her sound was a perfect tribute to Stevie Nicks!  Bella Donna was phenomenal!

Come out and join us for Colin Hay from “Men at Work”, Sunday July 26!

Sold Out Concert was a BLAST

Posted on July 6th, 2009

The show started with an awesome fly-by!  Swing Kings performed and they were phenomenal.  Burbank Phliharmonic Orchestra played Pops and some wonderful sounds in the 4th of July spirit.  Athena Mertes, who was performing with the Burbank Philharmonic has an extraordinary voice.   Anne Lee, only 17, also performing with the Burbank Philharmonic is an incredible violinist.

The atrium entertainment included the Jokesters, dressed as Uncle Sam and Statue of Liberty.  The Air Force had a presence with Ricky and Roxy.  They were 9-foot inflatables, with real people inside them.

The fireworks spectacular was the finale of the evening!  It was exraordinary and as fun as ever.

Don’t miss the next show!  Sunday, July 12 at 6:30!

We will see you soon!

Can you be “discovered” at the Starlight Bowl?

    Posted on June 24th, 2009

Annette Funicello, born October 22, 1942, in Utica, New York.  According to the Studio, Walt spotted her in a performance of Swan Lake at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank (just for the record, her dancing teacher insists it was The Nutcracker Suite), and she was given a two week test assignment as a Mouseketeer.  “Black hair, brown eyes. singer,  and dancer.”  Concerned that her last name might be difficult for audiences to remember, Annette considered changing her name to Annette Turner. Walt vetoed the idea, telling her that if she was talented, the name wouldn’t matter. Annette was the last of the original Mouseketeers to be hired, and would remain under contract to the Studio until 1970.

    Back in the Day

    Posted on June 24th, 2009

On April 1, 1916 land for what is now Stough Park was acquired by the City by deed of gift from Oliver J. Stough for the exclusive use as public parkland.

O.J. Stough was one of the last surviving veterans of the Mexican-American War in 1846. Stough later moved to Burbank and bought the first installment of what became a huge Burbank property in 1883. Part of the land included the parcels eventually developed for Stough Park and Civic Center Park (McCambridge Park).

Stough Park includes both the Starlight Bowl and the lower portion of the park. Park trails, roads, stone walls, picnic areas, and other improvements were constructed throughout the 1930’s. The park was used for camping programs in the early 1950’s.

The summer of 1935 marked the first scheduled use of a natural bowl amphitheater (Starlight Bowl) located in Stough Park for live performances. Discarded telephone poles were imbedded in the ground for seating. On June 1, 1951 the Burbank Starlight Theatre was dedicated. On March 26, 1957 the City Council approved changing the name to “Starlight Bowl”.

In August 1959 a construction project was completed that added two-levels to the facility. The addition would function as a storage area for instruments. The lower level would serve Civil Defense. Construction of the acoustical shell was completed in 1965.
